Utkan BAKIRCI is a European Patent Attorney, Turkish Patent & Trademark Attorney and Attorney at Law, with a Chemical Engineering background. He has the capacity to represent his clients before the European Patent Office, Turkish Patent and Trademark Office, World Intellectual Property Office and the National Courts. He will also be able to act before the newly established Unified Patent Court.
Utkan has started Istanbul Technical University (ITU) after graduating from Robert College. In 2009 he has become a chemical engineer and have worked in the polymer industry for a decade, always with an R&D focus. At first he worked as a production engineer and while leading the scale up of an innovative project in Kemerburgaz and Rotterdam plants, which would later bring the first patent of Organik Kimya corporation, he has started considering specializing as a patent attorney.
At his first attempt, he has become a patent and a trademark attorney by passing both of the national exams and was transferred to Research & Development Department in the same corporation, who owns the first certified R&D Center of Turkish chemical industry. He has worked as the Patent & Intellectual Property Leader by conducting all activities such as freedom to operate, patentability and weekly industrial searches, drafting and filing of European patent applications, validation of granted European patents and all others pertaining to Intellectual Property. In parallel to all these, he has prepared and passed the European Qualifying Pre-Examination and Paper A in order to become a European Patent Attorney, at his first attempt. In 2022 he became a European Patent Attorney by passing his remaining papers of the EQE. Additionally, he is in the list of Court Appointed Experts and actively being appointed to mainly patent and trademark trials by the Specialized Courts of Intellectual Property in Istanbul.
Besides professional activities which are essential for the training of a patent attorney, he has continued his legal studies also after becoming a national patent attorney. These include, completing the 2 years course of CEIPI Training in European Patent Law. At the same time, he started Law School at Kadir Has University with Honour Scholarship, attended all his legal courses and graduated in 4 years with the second rank in class. Utkan has completed his Master of Laws in Economic Law at Galatasaray University in order to obtain his LL.M degree. In 2023, he graduated from CEIPI’s diploma program on Patent Litigation in Europe at the University of Strasbourg, focusing on the Unified Patent Court, and qualified as a European Patent Litigator. Utkan is a registered professional representative before the Unified Patent Court.
